Yamaha Helm Master

Yamaha Helm Master

Capt. Ted Lund

Today’s center console boats and outboard engines are stretching the envelope — getting bigger and beefier. But running and docking these blue water-behemoths is getting easier and easier, thanks to cutting-edge technology like Yamaha’s new Helm Master® integrated outboard control system.

Yamaha’s Helm Master is based on its own digital platform that requires little dash space, connects via fly-by-wire for overviewsecond-station applications and maximizes performance of double- and triple-outboard installations by providing you with critical engine information, docking and maneuvering in close quarters and  almost effortless control whether trolling or running on the high seas.

The system is composed of six components working together to provide you and your family with safety and security on the water, all while enhancing the boating experience.

The first part of the system is the ignition control, which combined with Yamaha’s Y-COP® theft deterrence key fob not only controls your engines but deters a thief  from leaving the dock with your investment. With one swipe of the RFID key fob the fuel and ignition systems on your boat are rendered inoperable.

Once the engines are started, all of your critical system information is relayed to you from the Information Center, which replaces traditional tachometers, offering customizable data and look with varying color palettes. The 5-inch, high-definition LCD screen allows you to set preferences for control settings and view vital boat and date information from the big, full-color screen. You can also customize the Information Center via digital or analog displays, as well as day or night backlighting.

Once running, steering and maneuvering are a dream thanks to Yahama’s Digital Electronic Steering. In conjunction with the docking joystick and Enhanced Binnacle Control, boaters enjoy independent manipulation of twin- and triple-outboard installations to offer precise maneuvering in close  quarters.

In addition to traditional controls such as trim assist, the Enhanced Binnacle control offers free throttle when the shift function is disengaged, center-engine only setting for trolling or traversing no wake zones, station selection for multi-station installations and speed control with the touch of a single button. The mount also offers single-lever control of up to  four engines.

Yamaha’s entire system is designed to be skipper-centric, so that every aspect of operation is convenient. The Helm boatMaster  joystick combines the shift, throttle and steering wheel functions in one convenient control that places the central axis of the vessel at the helm, rather than the transom as with traditional control installations; this gives the captain directional control through a 360-degree range around the vessel. Real-time response eliminates the need to bump the boat in and out of gear while alternating forward and reverse shifting thanks to individual articulation of the power plants.
